Why most SaaS founders are advertising on the wrong platform

Most SaaS founders pick their first ad platform the same way: whatever a peer used, whatever's trending in their Twitter feed, or whatever feels most "professional" for B2B. LinkedIn gets picked because it "feels" like where business happens. Google gets picked because search feels like intent. Both instincts are reasonable and both are usually wrong for where these companies actually are - which is exactly why Meta Ads for SaaS businesses tends to be the platform nobody starts on and everybody should.

The LinkedIn trap

LinkedIn feels like the obvious B2B choice, so founders overspend there early - and get burned. It's essentially Facebook with worse targeting (account-based rather than genuine interest/behavior signal) at a steep premium. It only makes sense above roughly $130/month price points and a real $2-3k/month commitment. Below that, it's an expensive way to learn nothing.

The Google trap

Google feels safe because search implies intent. But intent only helps you if the keyword has real volume and beatable competition - and for most SaaS categories, any keyword with real volume is already being bid up by better-funded competitors who don't need short-term payback. You end up paying premium prices to compete with companies who can outlast you.

The "our buyers aren't on Facebook" myth

This is the belief that quietly steers founders away from the platform that would actually work. But every decision-maker you're trying to reach - founder, ops lead, marketing lead - has Facebook and Instagram, and opens them daily, including during work hours. The audience isn't missing. What's usually missing is a funnel built for a considered B2B purchase instead of copied from an e-commerce playbook.

What Meta is actually the right fit for

Any stageFast ICP signalFull creative range

Meta fits SaaS at almost any stage because it lets you target 1-3 specific customer profiles directly, run trust-building creative across every funnel stage (not just a single BOFU ask), and get real signal on message-market fit within weeks rather than months. That's the exact structure covered in our full-funnel Meta Ads strategy for SaaS.

When Meta genuinely isn't the answer

To be fair to the other platforms: Google can be right if you own a specific, under-served keyword. LinkedIn can be right at a high enough price point and budget. Reddit can work for a genuinely niche, non-AI-native product. These are real exceptions - they're just far less common than founders assume, which is why so many end up on the wrong platform by default rather than by evidence.

The wrong platform isn't the one that "doesn't work" - it's the one picked by instinct instead of by stage and price point.
The bottom line

Most SaaS founders default to LinkedIn or Google out of instinct, not evidence - and end up overpaying for signal they could get faster and cheaper elsewhere. For most stages and most price points, Meta Ads for SaaS businesses is the platform that actually matches the job, and it's usually the one being skipped.
