Budget-allocation questions are more useful than channel-ranking questions, because the real decision founders face isn't "which platform is best" in the abstract - it's "I have $1-3k a month, where does it actually go." Here's how we'd allocate it, channel by channel, with Meta Ads for SaaS businesses carrying most of the weight.
The first dollars: Meta
If you're deciding where the very first ad dollars of a SaaS company go, they go to Meta. It's the platform that works at any stage, gives you the fastest signal on which ICP and message actually resonate, and lets you test cheaply before committing real budget anywhere else. Every other channel is a later addition, not a starting point.
Budget by price point
How much you need depends on your offer. As a rule of thumb: you can start meaningfully with around $1k/month if you sell a low-ticket subscription (up to roughly $100/month), and you'll want closer to $2k/month once your price point sits higher, so you can gather enough signal without starving any single ad set. We cover the mechanics of running lean at these budgets in how to run Meta Ads for your SaaS with a small budget.
When Google earns a slice
Google Ads deserves budget once you can point to keywords with real search volume and manageable competition - not before. Spending here without that condition just means bidding against better-funded competitors on generic terms that don't convert.
When LinkedIn earns a slice
LinkedIn becomes worth testing once you're at a high enough price point (roughly above $130/month, closer to enterprise) and can commit at least $2-3k/month specifically to it. Below that, the CPMs eat any budget you allocate before it produces a usable sample size.
Never skip the retargeting slice
Regardless of total budget, a slice always belongs to retargeting - people who've already visited your site or watched a chunk of a video. They're the cheapest conversions available, and skipping this line to put more into cold prospecting is one of the fastest ways to waste a small budget.
Put your first and largest share of ad budget into Meta Ads for SaaS, sized to your price point ($1k/month for low-ticket, $2k+ for higher-ticket), keep a slice permanently on retargeting, and only add Google or LinkedIn once you've earned the specific conditions that make them worth the spend.
